CLINICALCYTOGENETICS TECHNOLOGISTS/TECHNOLOGIST TRANEES

  • Accessioning all clinical specimens received by laboratory
  • Accurately processing specimens sent to lab, including tissue culturing techniques and slide preparation and banding for Cytogenetic studies
  • Microscopy analysis including photo microscopy, computer image analysis and karyotyping
  • Other duties including preparation of reagents, washing and autoclaving glassware

Requirements: BA or BS in a biological/physical science required. Experience in cytogenetics and/or NCA certification, CLSp(CG), preferred.

CYTOTECHNOLOGIST

FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

To use professional judgement to perform accurate and timely microscopic examination of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens for cytologic diagnosis. Duties involved are in recognition, identification, and interpretation of detailed morphologic features of normal and atypical cells from various body sites.

CHARACTERISTICS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform thorough and accurate microscopic examination and compare cytologic findings with recognized cytomorphological criteria and correlate with clinical data of patient, using knowledge of normal cellular patterns, presence of organisms, inflammatory reactions, premalignant changes, benign and malignant neoplasms, cellular response to therapeutic agents, etc., to make a cytologic interpretation.
  • Report negative gynecologic (gyn.) specimens and follow all quality control guidelines.
  • Make preliminary cytologic interpretations on abnormal gyn. specimens, and submit these and all non-gyn. specimens to the pathologist for final interpretation.
  • Maintain quality control of proper laboratory and quality assurance procedures including 5 year retrospective review, correlation of cytology, and surgical specimens, accurate recording of daily workload and documentation of monthly workload.
  • Examines allowable number of slides per hour/day.
  • Provides all documentation required of a cytotechnologist by any agency's regulations..
  • Works with other cytotechnologists in providing an accurate preliminary diagnosis to difficult/unusual cases.
  • Participate in in-service and continuing education programs, and keep abreast of professional publications in order to maintain highest possible level of proficiency.
  • Prepare and present a continuing education lecture for cytology staff after attending a continuing education conference.
  • Participate in the Proficiency Program
  • Maintain all licensures required by inspecting agencies needed to perform screening duties at Bio-Reference Laboratories.
  • Maintains microscopes and computers and documents maintenance.
  • Brings to Department Supervisor's attention any potential problems/ problem cases.
  • Keep the Department Supervisor informed of any time off requests as far in advance as possible.
  • Follow Departmental and Bio-Reference policies and procedures on patient's and laboratory confidentiality and work ethics.
  • Complete any task or project assigned by the Cytology Supervisor, General Manager, Medical Director, or Administration.

HISTOTECHNOLOGIST / HISTOTECHNICIAN

Under the general supervision of a supervisor, the histotechnologist / histotechnician performs all laboratory procedures in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established company and departmental policies and procedures.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum)

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Experience (minimum 6 months preferred) in histologic techniques or any equivalent of training and experience
  • ASCP or other national certification preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Medium work of lifting up to 50 pounds and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Responsible for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects

WORKING CONDITIONS

ADMINISTRATIVE LABORATORY MANAGER

Under the administrative direction of the vice president, the laboratory manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all of the functions within the laboratory, including testing, staffing, training, scheduling, budgeting, maintaining supplies, and relating with department administration, other labs, and physicians; ensures that services are of the best quality, are cost contained, and are carried out in an expeditious manner; responsible for recognizing results or problems that require referral to the laboratory director.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology, chemistry, biology, or related life science or Associate in
  • Science degree in medical technology and meets CLIA and New York State personnel standards criteria
  • Six years working experience as a medical technologist
  • ASCP or other national certification preferred

Under the administrative direction of the Quality Systems Director, the Quality Systems Administrative Assistant provides clerical and secretarial assistance necessary to maintain the efficient productive operation of the Quality Systems department and the overall laboratory.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum)

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Mathematical, verbal, and computer skills at college level preferred
  • Excellent customer relationship skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Medium work of lifting up to 50 pounds and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Responsible for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects

Under the administrative direction of the Quality Systems Director, the Quality Systems Coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating, all of the functions within the scope of Quality Systems, including reviewing, interpreting and maintaining the Quality Control Program; arranging for and conducting internal quality audits; assisting with and reviewing Method/Instrument Validations; coordinating proficiency survey programs; writing and reviewing standard operating procedures; maintaining compliance with all regulatory standards to ensure that services are of the highest quality; recognizing results or problems that require referral to the Quality Systems Director; assisting supervisors with performance improvement/quality management monitors.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology, chemistry, biology, or related science or an Associate in Science degree in medical technology or meets other CLIA personnel standards criteria
  • Two years clinical laboratory or quality compliance experience
  • Excellent communication, computer and writing skills
