IMPORTANT NOTICE
New York State public Health law, Sections 585-588, provides that Clinical Laboratories may give clients only those blood collection supplies that do not have multiple uses, that are directly related to the collection of specimens and in amounts proportionate to the specimens received from the client.
Other States and the Federal Government have similar laws.

Supplies
Supplies and containers for our laboratory services, allowed by State and Federal laws, are provided at no additional charge. These include all blood collection tubes, needles, needle holders, slides, containers, preservative solutions and cytology fixative. Supply request forms are available from the lab and should be used to request needed items. Please allow 2-3 days for delivery of your supplies.

Containers and Vials

Container, Sterile: Plastic wide-mouthed, 5 ounce sterile container with graduated measure indicator on side. Supplied with cap. Use for any specimen for culture (with the exception of urine and stool cultures).

Culturette: Sterile swab in transport media. (Squeeze ampule to wet swab with transport media). Use for routine aerobic culturettes from all sites.

Gen-Probe Swabs: Two swabs and a plastic tube containing transport media. To be used only for DNA probe testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Specify male or female swab.

JEMBEC Plate: Plastic compact container with chocolate agar and CO2 generating tablet. Use for Gonorrhoeae Cultures

Parasitology Kit- Ova and Parasite Collection Vials: Two plastic vials containing PVA and formalin preservative. Inform patient of the importance of the proper sample volume.

Serum Vial: Plastic vial with blue cap. This vial has been specifically designed to contain either serum or plasma. Snap the cap securely for transport to the laboratory. Use for transportation of frozen specimens.

Urinalysis Vial: Plastic vial with graduated measurement indicator and orange or yellow cap. Preservative in tablet form added. DO NOT USE FOR URINE CULTURES.

Urine Container, for 24 hour Urine Collection: 64 ounce plastic container with handle.
Must specify: No Preservative, 6N HCL or Boric Acid

Urine Cultures: Plastic vial with Yellow Screw Cap. Bacteriostatic preservative present.
DO NOT USE FOR ROUTINE URINALYSIS.

Evacuated Tubes

Light Blue Top: Blue rubber stopper. Sodium citrate as anticoagulant. Available in 2.7 mL and 4.5 mL sizes. This is a siliconized tube containing a citrate solution which is specific for Prothrombin Time and other coagulation tests. The tube should be completely filled, (the ratio of blood to anticoagulant is critical for valid Prothrombin Time results). This tube should be inverted at least six times in order to facilitate mixing and prevent coagulation.

Green Top: Green rubber stopper Sodium or Ammonium Heparin as anticoagulant. Available in 3 mL and 10 mL sizes. After the tube has been filled with blood, it should be inverted at least six times in order to facilitate mixing and prevent coagulation.

Grey Top: Grey rubber stopper. Potassium Oxalate as an anticoagulant. Sodium Fluoride as preservative. Available in various sizes. After the tube has been filled with blood, it should be inverted at least six times in order to facilitate mixing and prevent Coagulation. Used mainly for glucose testing to prevent glycolysis.

Lavender Top: Lavender rubber stopper. EDTA as anticoagulant. Avoid exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures. Available in 2.5 mL and 4.5 mL. Also available in microtainer sizes for capillary collections. This tube is designed for most hematological procedures. After the tube has been filled with blood, it should be inverted at least six times in order to facilitate mixing and prevent coagulation. Note the 2.5 mL vial is for pediatric specimens and has a transparent lavender top.

Red Top (plain): Red stopper. No additive. Available in 3 mL and 10 mL sizes. This tube is used for tests where gel separator is not desirable- e.g. ABO/Rh Type, etc. There is no need to centrifuge this tube as it will not remain separated during transport.

SST With Clot Activator: This tube is the normal Serum Separator Tube. Please follow these instructions when using the Barrier Tube or the SST tube with Clot Activator in order to obtain the most accurate test results:

1. Collect blood specimen using the usual venipuncture technique. Fill tube completely.
2. Gently invert barrier tube five times to mix clot activator with blood.
3. Allow blood to clot for 30 minutes.
4. Centrifuge at High Speed for 15 minutes.
5. Remove from centrifuge. Barrier will have formed, separating cells from serum. All of the separation gel should have moved from the bottom of the tube to form a barrier layer.
6. The sample is now ready to be transported to the laboratory. Do not remove stopper.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR FROZEN SPECIMENS:

For test requiring a frozen specimen, pour off serum into the blue top PLASTIC VIAL and freeze, indicate serum on the vial label. DO NOT FREEZE GLASS vacuum tubes. CALL LOGISTICS for all frozen specimens.
