C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant produced by the liver. Elevated levels of CRP are associated with nonspecific inflammation. High sensitivity c-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is used to evaluate a patient’s risk of potential cardiovascular disease associated with persistent low levels of inflammation, which can lead to arterial luminal damage from atherosclerotic changes.
