5817 : Lupus Anticoagulant Screen
INFORMATION:
Alternate Name:
Lupus Inhibitor Screen
Methodology:
Clot Detection
Clinical Utility:
Used to detect lupus anticoagulant (LA) in the blood. LA is an autoantibody associated with excess blood clot formation. Several types of inhibitors cause PTT prolongation. One of the main causes is the so-called "lupus anticoagulant" which is one of the many antibodies in the Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome. Patients with a lupus anticoagulant have an increased risk of both arterial and venous thrombosis (abnormal clotting); thus, the term 'lupus anticoagulant' is a misnomer (called an anticoagulant because it paradoxically causes a prolonged PTT). The lupus anticoagulant can be associated with the disease known as systemic lupus erythrematosis (SLE or "Lupus"), hence its name. This test checks for antibodies within the lupus anticoagulant spectrum which may contribute to clotting.
