Clinical Utility:
MMR by IHC is useful to detect deficiencies in mismatch repair genes. Stage II colorectal cancer patients with MMR deficient tumors typically do not respond favorably to chemotherapy. In addition, metastatic solid tumors that are MMR deficient may derive benefit from pembrolizumab immunotherapy. MMR protein defect(s) testing is also an initial screening test for Lynch syndrome. An alternative test is MSI by PCR. The IHC stains tested by A943 include: MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 and PMS2.
