Heparin-Induced Platelet Antibody - Heparin can induce thrombocytopenia, a decreased platelet count, due to antibody stimulation. False positive results may be due to immune complexes. False negative results may be due to low titer, low avidity antibodies.

Collection Instructions:
ALQRD: Place 1-3 mL of serum from Red top in transport tube. Label as serum from Red; refrigerate or freeze as required.
Specimen Comment:
For serum: Centrifuge red top tube 15 minutes at approximately 1500 g as soon as possible after clotting.
For plasma: Centrifuge blue top tube 20 minutes at approximately 2500 g. Remove plasma from cells as soon as possible. Reject criteria: Gross hemolysis, Icteric specimen, Lipemic specimen, Serum separator tube (SST)
