FISH for t(8;21) is both diagnostic and prognostic for AML. AML patients with translocations between chromosomes 8 and 21 are a specific WHO subset defined as AML/ETO. Approximately 5-12% of all AML patients share a t(8;21) mutation which is regarded as a favorable prognostic marker.
